My six year old daughter just graduated from kindergarten. This is a letter to her and her future self.

My dearest,

I’m so proud that you’ve come this far to graduate from the kindergarten! It feels like yesterday that you walked through the door of your new classroom with so much excitement. Everyday, I’ve seen you open up your heart and mind to learn, explore, and grow. From learning to read and count to losing your first tooth, you’ve given your all. It was incredible to see you become an even stronger, more independent and fun loving girl. As you move on to be a first grader, I want you to remember a few lessons from kindergarten that could guide you through life.

Always be curious. Always carry your "it’s the best ever!" attitude even when things seem difficult. Every book you read will take you to unimaginable places. Every place you visit and every person you meet has a fascinating story. Ask questions to learn more. What is your story? As you start getting older, you’ll begin to form your own biases and opinions. These could be helpful to simplify the complex world we’re living in. Don’t rely on these too much though because they cloud your views of the world. Every encounter is special. Every new beginning is an exciting adventure. Keep being open minded. Keep exploring and forge ahead.

Surround yourself with friends who make you a better person. Finding truest friends is really difficult. Some people may find their best friends early in life, and some later. Both are perfectly fine! No need to feel sad if you’re not sure who your best friends are yet. Regardless of when you find those true friends, the key is to always look for those who help you be a better version of yourself. Spend time with friends who help you be braver, kinder, and laugh harder. Be with those who do not judge you for being who you are. The true friends are so dependable. They will be there for you through ups and downs. Sometimes, friends who you thought were your truest friends may end up gradually falling out. That is really ok. Friendships evolve as friends in it grow through life. Everyone’s in his or her own journey. The best thing we can do at times is just to wish those friends all the best as they go their own ways. Be with friends who always inspire you, and you will be in good shape.

Have a positive mindset. I have every confidence that you will achieve remarkable things in your life. I can’t wait to help you explore your interests, find your passion, and cultivate your strengths to get there. Along the way, let’s not forget that mindset and character are more important than the results. Always be present, grateful, and kind. Be positive even when nothing seems to go the right way. Focus on what you can control and what you can create. Happiness begins with the right mindset. That will help you see how beautiful life is.

I’m beyond grateful to be your mother and love you very much.

Your biggest fan,

Mom
